Samsung reveals new Galaxy Note II

(AP) ? Fresh off a legal battle with Apple, Samsung is announcing a new version of the Galaxy Note, an offbeat, oversized smartphone that's become a surprise hit.

Samsung, the world's largest maker of phones, is revealing the Galaxy Note II at a trade show in Berlin. The 5.5-inch screen is narrower but longer than on the first version. The processor is faster, and the software has been further adapted for the included stylus ? the phone's signature feature.

While Apple has been releasing a new smartphone model each year, Samsung makes several to target different types of customers. That includes low-end phones for price-conscious customers. As a result, Samsung has been selling more smartphones than Apple this year.

The Note runs on Google's Android operating system but isn't among the phones that Apple is asking a judge to ban from the U.S., after a jury in California ruled last week that some of Samsung's Android phones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple $1 billion in damages in a high-profile case that could force Samsung and other Android phone makers to rethink their designs.

The Note is designed to work well with a stylus for jotting notes and drawing on a screen, while styluses for other devices tend to be an afterthought. The Note's large screen also makes the phone more like a tablet and more suitable for playing games and consuming content. Samsung started selling a tablet version of the Note this month.

Samsung Electronics Co. says it has shipped 10 million first-generation Galaxy Note smartphone in one year.

Samsung says the new phone will go on sale in Europe and Asia in October. It did not say when it would launch with a U.S. carrier.

The Real Housewives of New York City Recap: Pirate Booty Call

The Real Housewives of New York City head to St. Barts for a girls week but did a fun filled night turn into a "Pirate Booty Call" for one housewife?

We break down the lies, confessions, and speculation here in THG's +/- recap.

The ladies fly into to St. Barts and I must agree with Aviva and Carole.  That looks like a small plane and a bumpy ride.  Plus 10 to Carole for holding it together given her history.

The island is gorgeous. The house is beautiful and the chef is hot.  Plus 8.  What more can you ask for from a vacation?

Well, apparently admiring the eye candy isn't enough for some but we'll get to that in a bit.

Sonja & Ramona Drink

Plus 15 goes to Carole.  Love her analogy about dealing with Ramona.  Sometimes in order to avoid the toddler tantrum you just give her the lollipop.  In this case Ramona got the master suite.

Of course she and Sonja decide to share not only the room but the bed.  Minus 7.  These two can't seem to spend ten minutes apart from one another or their favorite drink but I guess it is a girls vacation.

Sonja says she'll be the buffer between Ramona and well, basically everybody else but especially Heather.  Minus 9.  Perhaps she would have done a better job is she hadn't been drunk most of the time.  And I'm with Heather.  I'm tired of hearing about this nonexistent toaster oven.  I have a toaster oven at home.  They're really not all that exciting.

Maybe I just need to buy Sonja's cook book.

Poor Heather runs smack into a glass wall and damn near breaks her nose.  I suppose that's the price you pay for enjoying those killer views.  Plus 8 because she readily laughed at her own klutziness.

For a girl's week there were certainly a lot of men in the picture.  First Carole's boyfriend Russ shows up and plus 10, because he is a hottie and he handles the ladies drunken craziness well.

Sonja on the other hand is on the hunt for a man and she's not too picky about who.  Has it been that long or is it the banana rum talking?  Unfortunately for Sonja it doesn't look like she'll be feeling anyone up other than Ramona and the poor butler who can't get away.

Sonja takes the ladies out for a night on the town that includes plenty of tequila,  some skimpy pirate outfits, and a Johnny Depp look alike.  Eventually these drunken wenches make their way home but someone's got company.

St. Barts Booty Call

Minus 15.  LuAnn and Tomas, aka Johnny Depp stumble into her room at 3am.  Oh Countess what have you done?

In the next few scenes we watch her lie to Jacques on the phone and then try to cover her tracks with the ladies.  Perhaps she should have remembered she was wearing a mic.

It's a small island and an even smaller house.  How long before Ramona spills the beans to Jacques?  Will the Frenchmen take it in stride or will their baby plans be put on hold?  We'll all have to check back in next week as the St. Barts adventure continues.

What I thought about MAX Factor Kohl Pencil 080 Cobalt Blue:-

?

When I was checking out the sale in July at the MaxFactor counter, I came across this beauty. Needless to say, I picked it up immediately, as I was contemplating using different colors other than black on my waterline. This product, at 220/- INR, was great for me, as it did not pinch my pocket. Plus, the shade Cobalt Blue is truly gorgeous, and quite easy to apply. It is not super-creamy or too hard ? in fact, just right for me to apply on my lower lash line as well as upper eyelids. The package says that it is 1.45 gm. and it will last me till May 2015, so I have a long way to go with this one.

?

My first application of the color was absolutely satisfying. The color is a rich shade of Cobalt Blue, exactly as the company claims, and it glides on smoothly on my lower and upper eyelids. The color will suit those who want a slightly unconventional look, and I generally team this up with blue clothes and pink stuff. I personally feel the color should suit someone with a slightly pinkish hue to their skin, but that?s just personal. The price is very affordable, and I love this because it does exactly what it claims and stays on my lower lash line for 3 hours or so before it starts to fade and smudge on my oily skin (my dry-skinned sister btw has no such probs.. sometimes I dislike her. These are the times). It DOES smudge after 3 hours, so keeping a tissue handy as well as the Kohl to reapply when needed is a good idea. Good news is, this travels well, and with a simple design, I have no problem.

My pet peeve with this, however, is the fact that I have to sharpen it and that it is made of wood. Why make something with wood when polymer is there? Maybelline and Chambor has both come up with pencils with polymer-bases which can be sharpened just like a wood pencil (when we were kids we used to have these fluorescent colored pencils with white innards, indicating no-wood pencils? I loved them because you could sharpen the pencil and make roses with the shavings ? naturally, most of my childhood was spent pursuing such scholarly and creative thoughts, so I really never did what was actually meant to be done with the pencils ? writing).

I digress. Sorry.

This one stays on my upper eyelid for a good 6-7 hours at least and has to be removed with a makeup remover. When used as part of a bridal makeup, it smudged very nicely with a bit of help with my finger or a smudger, and can be used as the base of any eye makeup, which is gorgeous.

So, here is the skin swatch. I hope you guys get the fact how intense the color is. And yes, it is this intense.

So, without further ado, let me pick up the good news and the bad news about this product.

Hundreds hold Quds Day rally in Gaza

Hundreds of Palestinians held a protest in the Gaza Strip Friday against Israel and its hold over Jerusalem on the annual Iranian-inspired Quds (Jerusalem) Day.

"We are committed to the right of return and to liberation of prisoners and resistance against the occupation as long as it is on our land," Rabah Mohanna, a leader of the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, told the demonstrators.

"Jerusalem is not going to be restored by absurd negotiations," he said at the rally, held west of Gaza City.

Israel, which occupied Arab east Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it, claims both halves of the city to be its "eternal and indivisible capital."

But the Palestinians want the eastern sector as capital of their promised state and fiercely oppose any Israeli attempt to extend sovereignty.

Quds Day demonstrations, held on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, were established after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution in support of the Palestinian cause and an end to the Jewish state.

One Direction took part in the Closing Ceremony at the London Olympics, belting out their smash hit "What Makes You Beautiful" while being driven around on the flatbed of a truck.

It was quite the spectacle.

But the adorable boy band keeps things a lot simpler in its latest release, an acoustic version of the former Oasis track "Wonderwall." Watch now as the gorgeous young studs just sit around on the beach, harmonize and make the pulses of women everywhere race and race and race...

JUDGE DISMISSES ENVIRONMENTAL SUIT AGAINST CORPORATE

Scarinci Hollenbeck Attorneys Show Personal Jurisdiction Not Automatic Following Corporate Actions in Environmental Case

Lyndhurst, N.J., August 15, 2012 ? Scarinci Hollenbeck was involved in a recent decision in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey that found corporate officers do not immediately fall under a Court?s jurisdiction based on the jurisdiction it may have over the corporation.

The case was Virginia Street Fidelco, L.L.C. v. Orbis Products Corp., a CERCLA and New Jersey Spill Act case seeking environmental cost recovery relating to a former Orbis Products contaminated site at 55 Virginia Street in Newark, New Jersey.

In the amended complaint, Vernon G. Browne, a former financial vice president of Norda, Inc., Orbis Products? parent company, had been personally named as a defendant.

Scarinci Hollenbeck Attorneys William C. Sullivan and John M. Scagnelli, a Partner at Scarinci Hollenbeck and Chair of the firm?s Environmental and Land Use Group, represented Mr. Browne. They asked the Court to dismiss the individual claim against Mr. Browne due to a lack of personal jurisdiction and insufficient service of process.

They held that Mr. Browne?s limited contact with Orbis as part of his work as a corporate officer of Orbis? parent company, Norda, Inc., did not create the personal jurisdiction necessary in this case, particularly because his name did not appear in any of the documentation relating to environmental issues at the property.

U.S. Judge Stanley Chesler of the District of New Jersey agreed. In his ruling, he said that the plaintiffs, ?failed to provide anything to support the inference that Browne had any relevant contact with the forum, such that any claim arose out of that contact.?

His ruling reaffirmed the position that each defendant?s contacts with the forum state must be assessed individually, and do not necessarily follow a Court?s jurisdiction over the company. Mr. Browne?s attorneys applauded the decision.

?This ruling reaffirms clear limits on the level of responsibility placed on corporate officers for environmental law claims,? said Scagnelli. ?Any other ruling could have made every corporate officer personally liable for contamination regardless of their contact with those facilities.?

The dismissal covered only the individual claim against Mr. Browne. The case at large remains open.

Live from Samsung's 'Meet the new way' event in New York City!

It's just about time to "meet the new way." Samsung's sketch-heavy invitation clearly points to some type of pen-input device, and given the timing of the event and the fact that plenty of tablets have already been sold across the pond, we're expecting the Galaxy Note 10.1 to be outed properly... again. Judging from reports earlier this month, there will be plenty of new features (and color options) to be demoed since our last in-depth look at the evolving device, so expect a fairly packed show, complete with the typical Samsung fanfare. The event kicks off at 11AM ET, so stay tuned right here for the play-by-play from NYC.

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Thousands of angry South African workers met Tuesday on a rocky cliff within sight of their platinum mine shuttered by violent protests, shouting demands for more pay over the roar of circling police and military helicopters.

As authorities pleaded for calm, the men trekked there from the simple hostels and shacks near the Lonmin PLC mine, carrying pipes, clubs and machetes across the barren fields with high-tension electrical wires overhead.

As the workers met, the body of a middle-aged man who had been bludgeoned to death was found about 100 meters (yards) away. Police were investigating the crime, but the man appeared to be the 10th person killed at the Lonmin mine in unrest that is gripping South Africa's mining industry.

The rage involves longtime struggles and low pay faced by miners in a nation whose economy depends on cheap labor pulling precious minerals from the ground. A struggle between two labor unions also has been blamed.

The unrest at the Lonmin mine began Friday, as some 3,000 workers walked off the job over pay in what management described as an illegal strike.

Those who tried to work Saturday were attacked, management and the National Union of Mineworkers said.

On Sunday, the rage became deadly as a crowd killed two security guards there by setting their car ablaze, authorities said.

By Monday, angry mobs killed two other workers and overpowered police, killing two officers, officials said. Officers opened fire, killing three others, police said.

Operations appeared to come to a standstill Tuesday as workers stayed away from the mines, where 96 percent of all Lonmin's platinum production comes from. The stoppage spooked those investing in Lonmin, the world's third largest platinum producer. Lonmin's shares fell by 4.94 percent Tuesday at the London Stock Exchange.

Barnard O. Mokwena, an executive vice president for Lonmin, said the company continued to meet with the police regarding the violence. "Until we know why 3,000 people are under this influence to kill ... people, it's hard for us to believe this is a genuine complaint about the rights of workers," Mokwena said.

While Friday's walkout appeared to be about wages, the ensuing violence has been fueled by the struggles between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. Disputes between the two unions escalated into violence earlier this year at another mine.

Both unions have blamed each other for the killings and attacks at the mine at Marikana, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach members of the rival unions were unsuccessful Tuesday as some miners threatened journalists and beat on their cars with sticks, machetes and pipes. No journalists were harmed.

The striking miners gathered Tuesday at a rocky outcropping within sight of a processing facility at the Lonmin mine. They ordered visitors to remove their rings and hats and to turn off their mobile phones because they consider it a holy site.

Police mainly kept their distance from the meeting mine workers, though helicopters flew overhead. A contingent of soldiers in heavy bulletproof vests also stood by on armored trucks with heavy machine guns.

Capt. Dennis Adrio, a police spokesman, said: "Our objective is to civilize the situation on the ground. The second objective is to find who killed our two officers and those who killed the other dead."

Mining helped give birth to modern South Africa, as prospectors and later international companies rushed to areas around Johannesburg and elsewhere looking for gold, diamonds and other precious metals. Today, South Africa remains one of the world's dominant producers of platinum, gold and chromium.

But miners long have faced low salaries and poor working conditions. Apartheid kept black African workers from more lucrative jobs offered to whites. Though the nation became truly democratic in the 1990s, the salaries of black miners remain low.

As the protest continued Tuesday, a report released by an organization monitoring international mining corporations criticized Lonmin's operation at Marikana. The Bench Marks Foundation said Lonmin workers often live in deteriorating shacks without electricity, as workers' children suffer from chronic illnesses brought on by broken pipes spilling raw sewage.

Meanwhile, prostitution, alcoholism and other problems run rampant in the mining communities.

Mokwena, the Lonmin executive vice president, declined to comment about the report's allegations. However, he criticized the timing of the report's release, saying: "It propels more violence unnecessarily."

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US

Samsung Galaxy Tab 101 WiFi gets taste of Ice Cream Sandwich in the US

Samsung was widely (if unofficially) expected to upgrade the Galaxy Tab line to Ice Cream Sandwich this summer. Thankfully, that wasn't just wishful thinking on the part of a few fans. Numerous Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi owners in the US have reported receiving an official push to Android 4.0.4 shortly after getting out of bed on Monday. The new TouchWiz, Chrome support and more are all welcome -- just don't anticipate any unique twists from the upgrade. In some respects, we're likely getting a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with a Tegra 2 processor. The only real uncertainties are when the rest of the eligible Galaxy Tab line will make the leap as well as the possibility of Jelly Bean; hopefully, it's not the end of the update road for some of Samsung's earliest tablet adopters in the country.

F-bomb makes it into mainstream dictionary

(AP) ? It's about freakin' time.

The term "F-bomb" surfaced in newspapers more than 20 years ago but will land Tuesday for the first time in the mainstream Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, along with sexting, flexitarian, obesogenic, energy drink and life coach.

In all, the company picks about 100 additions for the 114-year-old dictionary's annual update, gathering evidence of usage over several years in everything from media to the labels of beer bottles and boxes of frozen food.

So who's responsible for lobbing F-bomb far and wide? Kory Stamper, an associate editor for Merriam-Webster, said she and her fellow word spies at the Massachusetts company traced it back to 1988, in a Newsday story that had the now-dead Mets catcher Gary Carter talking about how he had given them up, along with other profanities.

But the word didn't really take off until the late '90s, after Bobby Knight went heavy on the F-bombs during a locker room tirade.

"We saw another huge spike after Dick Cheney dropped an F-bomb in the Senate in 2004," and again in 2010 when Vice President Joe Biden did the same thing in the same place, Stamper said.

"It's a word that is very visually evocative. It's not just the F-word. It's F-bomb. You know that it's going to cause a lot of consternation and possible damage," she said.

Many online dictionary and reference sites already list F-bomb and other entries Merriam-Webster is only now putting into print. A competitor, Oxford University Press, has F-bomb under consideration for a future update of its New Oxford American Dictionary but beat Merriam-Webster to print on a couple of other newcomers: mash-up, added to the Oxford book in 2005, and cloud computing, included in 2010.

No worries, Stamper said. The dictionary biz isn't a race.

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate gets a cover-to-cover overhaul every decade or so in addition to yearly upgrades. The Springfield, Mass.-based company also picks a defining word of each year closer to Thanksgiving. Among the company's other additions this year, including online at Merriam-Webster.com, and various apps:

The Oprah-inspired "aha moment," the Stephen King-popularized earworm, as in that truly torturous tune you can't get out of your head, and man cave, brain cramp and bucket list.

King, in a 2009 column for Entertainment Weekly headlined "The Trouble With Earworms," wrote of waking up in the middle of the night for a glass of water when he found himself singing a snippet of a lyric.

"My friend the Longhair says that's what you call songs that burrow into your head and commence chewing your brains. The dreaded earworm can turn even a great song into something you'd run from, screaming at the top of your lungs. If only you could," he wrote.

Stamper said the word, a translation of the German ohrwurm, surfaced in English in the late '80s as a way to describe untranslatable words. As a tune that won't leave your head, "It just solidified itself in the national linguistic consciousness in America," she said.

Earworm isn't actually a new word for Merriam-Webster but the definition is to differentiate from the once-sole description of a specific blight on ears of corn.

The first reference found by Merriam-Webster for "aha moment" dates to 1939 in a book of psychology. Its use was sporadic until the '90s, when Oprah Winfrey began using it on her no-longer-on-the-air TV show.

"In fact, aha moment is so closely associated with Oprah that in 2009, she and Mutual of Omaha got involved in a legal imbroglio over Mutual of Omaha's use of the phrase, with Oprah claiming that aha moment was her catchphrase and she had the rights to it," Stamper said.

The case was settled out of court in 2009.

The word "tweet" led last year's new-word highlights from Merriam-Webster. This year's additions are more eclectic, Stamper said.

"This is a list of really descriptive and evocative, fun words. Some years, not so fun. Some years it's a lot of science words. Some years it's a lot of words around really heavy topics," she said.

There are a few of those this time around: copernicium among them.

It's a short-lived, artifically produced radioactive element that has 112 protons and is the most recent addition to the Periodic Table of Elements. It was first created in a German lab in 1996 and named for the astronomer Copernicus.

The recession blues are represented.

Merriam-Webster added "systemic risk" and a new definition for "underwater," to describe the heartbreaking realization that you owe more on your mortgage than your property is worth. Among other new economic terms is an extra definition for "toxic," as it relates to an "asset that has lost so much value that it cannot be sold on the market."

Flexitarian, traced to 1998, is defined as "one whose normally meatless diet occasionally includes meat or fish," while obesogenic (dating to 1986) is an adjective for "promoting excessive weight gain: producing obesity."

Stamper calls flexitarian one in a long line of "you are what you eat" entries.

"As our society has become more aware of our eating patterns, we've seen a proliferation of its use," she said. "There are people who object to the very idea of being a flexitarian, and therefore to the existence of the word."

Obesogenic remains a term more restricted to technical writing, Stamper said. It refers to an environment where something or some pattern ? food deserts in a city, for example ? is suspected of putting people at risk for obesity.

"Over the last few years, it's showed up quite a bit in more general sources, like The New York Times," she said.

Merriam-Webster leads the dictionary market, said John Morse, president of the privately held company who wouldn't release sales figures. He also wouldn't release a full list of new entries, in part to put off competitors.

"Let them find their own new words," he joked. "It's not a cutthroat business but we like to say it's a bare knuckles business." Morse did acknowledge: "It's harder for some paper dictionaries to stay in business in the era of online dictionaries."

And he allowed for a sneak peak at the Top 25, rounded out by:

Craft beer, e-reader, game changer, a new definition for "gassed" as slang for drained of energy, gastropub, geocaching, shovel-ready (a construction site ready for work) and tipping point.

PROLONGUE A FRIENDSHIP BEFORE ANY RELATIONSHIP ...

Prolong a friendship for as long as possible. Plant the seeds before the tree is ready to grow and shoot.

Why do I say prolong a friendship? I say prolong a friendship for as long as possible because it allows the foundations to be planted deep in the soil. The soil is only rich if the foundations of a relationship is catered for and examined for a long time. What does that mean in plain English? What I am saying is before you jump into a relationship, hoping for the best without preparing for the worse, you need to make sure you understand the person you are going out with. I am not saying understand them perfectly, but fully make sure you and your future partner have similar interests. I have said before that values and beliefs are very important, but if the girl doesn?t like the same food as you or the same kind of movies, you will have problems. You and your partner need to enjoy each others company to the very last second. You need to like the same things as your partner so there is no quarrels or disagreements. Of course sometimes you might need to compramise but if your partner only likes Jazz, and you hate it, there will be problems, regardless of how strong the values you have with one another.

You may have have the same values as your partner, but if the approach isn?t the same or similar then there will be a few problems. You both may believe in success, but what success means for one individual, may not be the same for another. This is very deep stuff because connectivity and similarity in how you and your partner live your lives needs to combine together like half a heart with the other half of a heart. The heart doesn?t work effectively if one heart is purple, and the other is red. It doesn?t matter if they are the same size and diameter.

I have had amazing and less amazing friendships. What I have realised is that friendships last longer than relationships in a very generalised sense. The reason relationships work so well is because two parties realised that before they took the leap of faith, they made sure they wore their helmet and had the right size suit to execute a fantastic dive and smooth landing. If you don?t build a friendship based on foundations and similar interests, you will have a crash landing and it won?t be nice. Take as long as possible to prepare yourself for the jump or leap. It is seriously?worth it. Yes, women will get bored. And yes, men?will get bored if the person is taking so long, but if you wait long enough, someone who is right for you will wait with you and for you. They will stand by you when you fall, and fly with you when you rise.

Sometimes, you and another person may jump into a relationship not knowing much about the other person, only hoping for the best. What I can say from experience is don?t let all the glamour of being in a relationship get into your head. It is hard work, it if fun, but if you don?t prepare yourself or are ready, you will flop. Don?t only look at the positives, but examine the negatives and see whether you can cope with the person.

Ask yourself this harshly: DO THE POSITIVES OF THIS RELATIONSHIP OUTWEIGH THE NEGATIVES GREATLY?

You should never lower your standards to fit another person. You should never say another woman or man is a standard. Only standard yourself. You should never continue a relationship for the sake of it. You should never try to change a person, only accept. If you cannot accept the person, don?t be in that relationship.

It is majorly important that you ask simple questions towards your partner or friend. Questions like ?Tell me about your morning.? Simple questions are always the best questions because the way a man or woman answers it, can either attract you to them or make you less interested in them. An individual has the ability to approach their story of?their morning, but the way this particular woman or man described it, attracted you to them. May seem trash talk, but believe me, it makes a hell of a difference.

Simplicity is key in any relationship. Being deep is important but if you are simple, there is no need to be deep because everything complex, was once simple.

I never used the word love in this post because love comes when your friendship is exactly what you want it to be. You will know when it hits you. I do not need to explain.

Australian Adams wins Sydney's City2Surf

Australian Liam Adams won Sydney's biggest road running race for the second consecutive year on Sunday despite blustery conditions, finishing the 14-kilometre (8.7 mile) City2Surf in just over 41 minutes.

Cross country runner Adams, 25, led for most of the race from Sydney city to Bondi beach in some of the worst conditions ever experienced for the famous run which attracts serious athletes among its 85,000-strong field.

"I took the risk in going out and taking it too hard," Adams told the Sydney Morning Herald.

At one point early in the race Adams said he thought he had made the wrong decision, and that runner-up Harry Summers could run him down.

But he said he thought he broke his rival on the steep hills of Sydney's east "and I just held on for dear life".

Adams is the first Australian to win back-to-back City2Surf races since Steve Moneghetti in the early 1990s. His main rival and 2011 runner-up Michael Shelley is in London to compete in the Olympic marathon.

Adams won in 41 minutes, 31 seconds -- only 20 seconds behind his 2011 winning time -- despite the cold and windy weather.

"It was worse than last year -- that wind coming into Bondi was tough," Adams said.

Summers' time was 42 min 22 sec and Mitch Brown finished third in 42:28. Lara Tamsett was the first woman across the line with a time of 46:55.

Choosing the Right College Program

If you are about to graduate high school and have college in your eye as your next big step, it?s never too early to start looking at schools and college programs. It may seem like a daunting task to figure out which one will suit you best, but with a few helpful tips you?ll be well on your way to getting a degree that interests you and will provide an exciting career for your future.

While many adults, attendants, and other authorities may express how important a college or university?s rank is, you must remember that this is not the ?be all, end all?. Just because a school is ranked in the top 10 does not mean it is the best school for you, and it most certainly doesn?t mean it has a program that will interest you or suit your intended career path.

The key to finding the perfect match is making sure you will meet the level of your prospective schools? academic standards.

Things like your high school GPA/QPA, SAT/ACT scores, and entrance criteria are all things each school will take a look at. If you find you?re aligned with these standards, you?ll be less stressed when it comes to application and acceptance time.

A school?s selectivity can also affect your decision to apply. The selectivity reflects the percentage of students accepted by the school out of the number of students who have applied. Prestigious schools are extremely popular and while they offer a wide array of college majors, they don?t have room for everyone to get accepted. Instead, students that apply will have to meet stringent admission criteria.

This is an important thing to consider since each school you apply at will have an application fee that you must pay when you apply.

Don?t forget about extra-curricular activities! Colleges look for students that show leadership and take interest in activities outside of the classroom. It helps them find a good student balance on their campus and shows them your strengths and abilities showcasing what you can offer the school or university. It?s never too late to start if you don?t have much in the way of sports, music, or volunteering. If sports and music isn?t your thing, join a club or run for student council.

In the end, selecting a perfect school is as much them choosing you as you choosing them. Remember to work hard in high school and participate in a few activities or sports that you enjoy. Apply early to schools or programs that interest you because once colleges start getting tight on space, they are much more picky with their acceptance letters.

U.S., Israel at odds over Iran nuke program intelligence

President Barack Obama (R) meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office in March. (Mark Wilson/Getty??

The White House expressed confidence Friday that American intelligence will know if Iran escalates its nuclear program in a sprint to build an atomic bomb?a day after Israel's defense minister warned that the allies might not know "in time" to prevent it.

"We have eyes, we have visibility into the program," press secretary Jay Carney told reporters at his daily briefing. "We feel confident that we would be able to detect a break-out move by Iran towards the acquisition of a nuclear weapon."

"We believe there continues to be the time and space to pursue this course," Carney said, referring to punishing American and international economic sanctions on the Islamic republic. "It is the best course of action to ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. We take no options off the table, and we consult with our allies all the time about the situation in Iran with regards to this program."

But Carney's professed confidence about the quality of the information regarding Iran's nuclear program, widely seen by American and Israeli officials as an attempt to acquire the ability to build a nuclear weapon, appeared to conflict sharply with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak's just a day earlier.

Barak told Israel Radio that news reports of a new American intelligence assessment that Iran has made surprising progress towards a nuclear weapon makes it "less clear and certain that we will know everything in time about their steady progress toward military nuclear capability."

Israel has warned that it views a nuclear-armed Iran as a threat to its very existence and reserves the right to use military force against Tehran's atomic program. Carney's reference to taking "no options off the table" is diplo-speak for the same thing?but where Israeli officials have been ramping up their public warnings about possible military action, their American counterparts have steadfastly insisted that there is time yet to tighten the economic vise further on Iran in hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough.

"We work very closely with our Israeli counterparts on this issue. We share information as a matter of course, and we share an assessment of where Iran is, and what its capacities are, and what the timelines look like," Carney said Friday. He noted that "international inspectors" from the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency have had access to key atomic sites in Iran.

"It is our firm belief that there is time and space to pursue the diplomatic option that includes an extremely, and increasingly, aggressive sanctions, includes diplomatic isolation, and international condemnation," he said.

Mitt Romney has repeatedly accused Obama of being weak in the face of Iran's defiance of international pressure?but has not spelled out a policy that differs in any meaningful way from the incumbent's approach. Still, aides to the president are mindful of the potential political dimension in attacks claiming that there is daylight between the United States and Israel.

On Thursday, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported that Obama had received a new National Intelligence Estimate (NIE)?the consensus assessment of the American intelligence community?that "Iran has made surprising, notable progress in the research and development of key components of its military nuclear program." The daily cited unnamed "Western diplomats and Israeli officials."

Carney declined to comment on the news report, but some American officials bristled at what they saw as a naked Israeli effort to pressure Washington into taking a more hawkish line.

If the Haaretz report is correct, the new NIE would be yet another shift in American intelligence agencies' assessment of just what Tehran is doing?though nothing so momentous as an NIE compiled in 2007. That report said Iran had halted its military nuclear program in 2003 and that there was no clear evidence that those efforts had resumed. The NIE came in the aftermath of the Iraq War intelligence debacle, in which the United States incorrectly insisted Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Iran flatly denies that it seeks nuclear weapons and insists that it aims only to bolster its ability to produce energy for civilian purposes.

Some American officials say that Iran wants the ability to build a nuclear weapon, not necessarily to actually acquire an atomic arsenal.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told the Senate Intelligence Committee in January that: "We assess Iran is keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons, in part by developing various nuclear capabilities that better position it to produce such weapons, should it choose to do so. We do not know, however, if Iran will eventually decide to build nuclear weapons." He underlined that Iran was guided by a rational "cost-benefit" approach that he said gave the international community leverage to shape Tehran's decision.

While Republicans have accused Obama of shortchanging the security of Israel?thought to be the region's only, and undeclared, nuclear power?they have also loudly complained about national security disclosures regarding an unprecedented cyberwar effort by the Obama administration to sabotage Iran's atomic program.

Suicide attack kills 3 NATO troops in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bombing struck a NATO patrol in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing three coalition troops, the international military force said.

The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the assault in Kunar province. The attack emphasized the insurgency's continued ability to wreak violence despite fierce efforts by the Afghan government and international forces to wipe out the militants' leadership.

Initial reports indicated the attack targeted a NATO foot patrol near the headquarters of the provincial government in Kunar, according to the coalition. NATO did not give the nationalities of the troops who were killed.

Details of the attack were still unclear by mid-afternoon. A spokesman for Kunar's provincial government said there were two suicide bombers on foot, and they detonated their explosives outside the council building in the provincial capital of Asadabad. The spokesman, Wasifullah Wasify, said at least one Afghan civilian was killed and three were wounded in the blast.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement that two insurgents drove explosives-laden vehicles into the NATO patrol from opposite directions. He claimed they killed 17 international troops. The insurgents typically claim far higher death tolls in their attacks.

NATO said so far only one suicide bomber was confirmed to have taken part in the attack and he was on foot.

Steve Jobs Would Have Hated What's Happening In The Samsung Patent Trial Right Now

Steve Jobs was undoubtedly a big force behind Apple's decision to sue Samsung for patent infringement. He famously said he wanted to destroy Google and its manufacturing partners (including Samsung) for ripping off Apple's products by fighting them in the courtroom.

However, Jobs would probably be cringing right now if he had to watch Apple's internal discussions about early prototypes for the iPhone and iPad dredged up for the world to see. These revelations take away one of the key things Jobs worked for at Apple: the mystery and magic of Apple's design process.

In Walter Isaacson's biography of Jobs, the former CEO describes Apple's design process as an endless series of refinements that eventually take a product from good to great to magical. To illustrate this point, he uses the example of The Beatles' song "Strawberry Fields Forever," which evolved over the course of several demos to the song we know today:

It's a complex song, and it's fascinating to watch the creative process as they went back and forth and finally created it over a few months. They kept sending it back to make it closer to perfect. The way we build stuff at Apple is often this way. Even the numbers of models we'd make of a new notebook or iPod. We would start off with a version and then begin refining, doing detailed models of the design, or the buttons, or how a function operates. It's a lot of work, but in the end it just gets better, and soon it's like, 'Wow, how did they do that?!? Where are the screws?'

The patent trial going on now is providing an answer to the question Jobs preferred to leave unanswered: how does Apple do it?

It's now possible to trace the many iterations of the iPhone - from its early days as an iPod with numbers on the click wheel to the finished product that was released in 2007. We can see the missteps Apple made along the way, like considering a version of the device that's way too tall and thin. Even worse, we can see the point at which Apple gave up, choosing to abandon plans to make the iPhone out of two curved pieces of glass because it cost too much.

Likewise, the earliest prototypes of the iPad show a super thick device that's nowhere near as sexy as the iPad that was released in 2010.

In truth, seeing all the different ways these products might have turned out shouldn't make the iPhone or iPad any less awe-inspiring. If anything, it's just that much more impressive to consider all the tough choices Apple's designers had to make to end up with the products they made.

What might be changing, though, is how we view Apple. The company and its team of designers did have some vision of what they wanted, but they often grasped at straws to get there, considering any and every idea under the sun.

For better or worse, Apple's screws are starting to show.

Bernanke says many struggle despite US recovery

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says data that show the U.S. economy in recovery doesn't fully capture the tough times felt by many.

Bernanke says that while measures of consumer spending, income and wealth point to improvement, "many individuals and households continue to struggle with difficult economic and financial conditions."

His comments were made during a pre-recorded speech on economic measurement to the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth in Cambridge, Mass.

Bernanke says statistics can sometimes hide important information. He said there has been interesting developments in the study of "well-being" and cited the Kingdom of Bhutan, which abandoned tracking gross national product in 1972 in favor of a measure of happiness.

Bernanke made no comments about Fed policy or the July jobs report released last Friday.

Monti warns euro crisis threatens EU as a whole

He further told the magazine that the euro's disintegration would "destroy the founding of the European project." (AP Photo/Riccardo De Luca)

(AP) ? Italy's prime minister has warned that the eurozone's sprawling debt crisis has created resentment amid the bloc's nations, which could ultimately trigger a breakup of the wider European Union.

Mario Monti told German news magazine Der Spiegel in an interview published Sunday that eurozone tensions over the past few years "bear the traits of a psychological dissolution of Europe," adding that Europe "must work hard to contain it."

The debt crisis started in Greece more than two years ago, and soon engulfed Ireland and Portugal, with all three eventually needing to be bailed out. Spain recently applied for an aid package to rescue its troubled banks, and Italy, the eurozone's third-largest economy, has also been hit hard by rising borrowing costs on its government debt.

Asked about a strengthening in resentment between the allegedly profligate southern European nations and the bloc's thrifty northern members, Monti told Der Spiegel "it is very alarming, and we have to fight against it."

"Yes, there is a front line in this area between north and south, there are reciprocal prejudices," he said according to the interview's German translation.

An Italian newspaper this week run a front page decrying alleged German domination of Europe, showing an image of Chancellor Angela Merkel ? often criticized for insisting on austerity measures and fiscal discipline in the crisis-hit nations ? alongside the headline "Fourth Reich," alluding to a new generation of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime.

German media, in turn, have often criticized Greece and other southern nations, accusing them of failing to live up to their financial commitments to the 17-nation Eurozone. Sunday's edition of Germany's top news website Spiegel looked at Italy's changing view of Germany, and how the eurozone crisis has strained friendly ties.

Monti insisted the 17-nation currency's disintegration would "destroy the founding of the European project."

"Therefore it is the prime task of the nations' leaders to explain to their citizens Europe's real situation and not give in to old prejudices," he was quoted as saying.

Monti, a former EU commissioner who now leads a government of technocrats, is lobbying for bolder political steps and help from the European Central Bank to counter the crisis, but Germany and others reject some of the proposed rescue measures.

He is set to meet Merkel, the leader of Europe's biggest economy, later this month in Berlin.

Meanwhile, Romano Prodi, a former Italian prime minister and president of the EU Commission, urged Germany to show "true leadership" in steering the continent through the crisis, saying the bloc's biggest economy has the duty "to lead Europe toward a better future."

According to text excerpts of an op-ed in Monday's edition of Germany's top-selling tabloid Bild, Prodi warned that "the confrontational debate between those receiving and those giving has already become common and destroys the founding walls of the European idea."

If Germany fails to lead through the crisis, it "would be the political end, for Europe and for Germany," he insisted, urging Berlin to present a "clear action plan to achieve a democratic, federally structured Europe."
