Brady bests Peyton

NE sails to 24-point lead, then holds on against Broncos rally to win 31-21

FOXBORO, Mass. - Tom Brady and Peyton Manning were both solid in their latest showdown. As usual, Brady beat him even though Manning was in a new uniform.

In the 13th meeting between the star quarterbacks, and first since Manning joined the Denver Broncos, Brady directed four scoring marches of at least 80 yards and the Patriots won 31-21 on Sunday.

Brady improved to 9-4 against Manning, who left the Indianapolis Colts after last season. Brady completed 23 of 31 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown and ran for another. Manning was 31 of 44 for 345 yards and three touchdowns but lost a fumble on a third-quarter sack.

The fumble led to Stevan Ridley's 8-yard run that put the Patriots (3-2) ahead 31-7 with about five minutes left in the third quarter. Ridley led the Patriots with a career-high 151 yards rushing.

Manning then threw touchdown passes of 2 yards to Eric Decker and 5 yards to Brandon Stokley but Denver (2-3) lost a fumble with 3:42 remaining.

The Patriots set a franchise record with 35 first downs as they kept their offense rolling one week after gaining 580 yards, 247 on the ground, in a 52-28 rout of the Buffalo Bills. The Broncos sputtered after beating the Oakland Raiders 37-6.

Brady and Manning first faced each other in the third game of the 2001 season. The Patriots won 44-13 in Brady's first career start.

There were plenty of close games in subsequent regular-season matchups with six of the previous seven decided by seven points or less. Sunday's outcome was different, although Manning brought the Broncos back from a 24-point deficit in the second half.

His scoring pass to Stokley followed a fumble by Brady on a sack.

Ridley then lost a fumble on New England's next possession and Manning seemed poise to keep the comeback going. A 28-yard completion to Demaryius Thomas put the ball at the Patriots 14 but two plays later Willis McGahee fumbled and Jermaine Cunningham recovered at the New England 11..

The Patriots led 17-7 at halftime and 31-7 after three quarters. Brady and his runners kept slicing through the Denver defense with a balanced attack. They went ahead to stay, 14-7, midway through the second quarter on a 14-play drive (seven pass plays and seven runs) capped by Shane Vereen's 1-yard run.

Ridley had his third 100-yard rushing game of his career, all this season. Wes Welker, the NFL's leading receiver last year with 122 catches, had 13 for 104 yards.

The Broncos wasted an excellent opportunity on their first series. Manning hit Thomas with a 43-yard completion to the Patriots 10-yard line, but Sterling Moore stripped the ball and recovered the fumble. The Patriots went four-and-out on the ensuing possession then the Patriots scored on their next three possessions ? 84 yards to Brady's 8-yard pass to Welker, 80 yards to Vereen's touchdown and 93 yards to Stephen Gostkowski's 23-yard field goal.

Denver did tie the game 7-7 on Manning's 1-yard pass to Joel Dreessen but didn't reach the end zone again until Manning hit Decker to end a 90-yard march, cutting the lead to 31-14 with 1:08 left in the third.

The Patriot even got key plays from their backup running backs. Brandon Bolden had a 24-yard gain on the series leading to Gostkowski's field goal. On that same drive, Danny Woodhead gained 25 yards on a pass from Brady on a third-and-14 play from the Broncos 11.

Woodhead kept another drive going in the third quarter with a 19-yard rush on third-and-17 at the Patriots 43. That series ended with Brady's touchdown dive.

One-fifth of spine surgery patients develop PTSD symptoms

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Nearly 20 percent of people who underwent low back fusion surgery developed post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms associated with that surgery, according to a recent Oregon Health & Science University study published in the journal Spine.

Past studies have noted PTSD symptoms in some trauma, cancer and organ transplant patients. But this is the first study, its authors believe, to monitor for PTSD symptoms in patients undergoing an elective medical procedure.

"It is maybe not surprising that significant surgical interventions have psychological as well as physical impacts," said Robert Hart, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at OHSU and senior author of the study. "I think it means that we in the medical community need to monitor for these effects in our patients and to manage them when they occur."

The study found that the strongest factor in determining whether a spine surgery patient suffered PTSD symptoms after the surgery was whether the patient had a psychiatric disturbance -- depression or anxiety disorders, for example -- before the surgery. But some patients who had no such pre-surgery diagnoses also suffered PTSD symptoms after the spine surgery, the study found.

The OHSU study involved 73 of Hart's surgical patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion surgery, a procedure in which two or more lumbar vertebrae in the back are fused together, usually including implantation of metal screws and rods as part of the procedure.

Surgeons at the OHSU Spine Center always look for other ways to deal with back pain before surgery. But sometimes, surgery is the only option. And spinal fusion is often major surgery that may involve complications and often involves a long recuperation period. The majority of patients in the study reported a good experience and had substantial relief of their pre-operative pain.

Hart said the study results might offer guidance to doctors and surgeons in advising potential spine surgery patients about the surgery. For patients at higher risk, the results suggest doctors and surgeons might offer treatment for them prior to surgery, Hart said.

"At the end of the day, I hope this will make changes in the way we prepare people for surgery, to reduce these psychological impacts. This is analogous to how we currently optimize patients' physical condition before major surgery," Hart said.

Hart said he wants to study that issue next -- and measure which pre-surgery interventions might work best to reduce or eliminate any PTSD effects.

In Kremlin's crosshairs? Russian tycoon Lebedev charged with hooliganism

Russian billionaire banker and newspaper entrepreneur Alexander Lebedev may be about to receive the same treatment as other tycoons who have meddled in politics without the Kremlin's permission: a prison term.

Mr. Lebedev has been charged with "hooliganism... motivated by political hatred," which carries a potential jail sentence of 5 years, in connection with a televised dust-up between himself and billionaire real estate magnate Sergei Polonsky that occurred over a year ago.

Lebedev, a former KGB spy whose family owns a string of newspapers in Britain, admits striking Mr. Polonsky, but insists he was acting "preventively" after being threatened during a heated discussion on the popular talk show NTVshniki. Video of the altercation has been available on YouTube and other sources since last September.

Polonsky, a former paratrooper, was knocked down in the scuffle, and later said he had suffered a cut on his arm and torn trousers as a result of Lebedev's attack.

The belated timing of the charges, as well as the addition of "political hatred" ? which greatly increases the sentence that can result from a simple "hooliganism" conviction ? has Lebedev's supporters claiming that it's really all about political payback from the Kremlin. Lebedev has always been careful not to oppose Putin directly, but he is part owner, along with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, of the combative opposition weekly Novaya Gazeta, and is major sponsor of the Anti-Corruption Fund set up by opposition leader Alexei Navalny last spring.

Lebedev was also an outspoken critic of the recent prison sentence meted out to three members of the band Pussy Riot who were also charged with "hooliganism" plus the sentence-multiplying addition of "religious hatred" for performing a profane anti-Putin "punk prayer" in Moscow's leading cathedral.

"We cannot accept the charge of 'political hatred.' Lebedev was meeting Polonsky for the first time in his life," and neither man is a politician, says Artyom Artyamov, a close Lebedev adviser.

"It's just ridiculous. It leaves us totally perplexed ... but Lebedev intends to face the charges. He refused to sign an undertaking not to leave the country, but he is in Russia. He considers this a completely illegal operation, but he will appear in court, or show up for interrogation, or whatever they demand," Mr. Artyamov says.

Lebedev's son, Yevgeny, who runs the family's British holdings ? which include the London Evening Standard and the Independent ? issued a statement Wednesday that said "my father has been targeted because of his determination to fight against corruption and to be a crusader for democracy in a country where this has not always been welcome.... I don't condone violence, but the punishment does not fit the crime here. We need more Russians to speak out against injustice, not fewer. I hope this isn't the start of a new crackdown."

The charges against Lebedev come amid a wave of other state actions that appear aimed at intimidating or silencing critics, including the expulsion of a leading opposition deputy from the Duma earlier this month, and a raft of new legislation that has the overall effect of sharply raising the penalties for dissent.

After the televised fist fight between the two tycoons briefly scandalized Moscow last year, then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin publicly commented, appearing to put the whole episode down to the ill manners of Russia's new rich. "They hit each other in the ear. That is hooliganism," Mr. Putin said at the time. "Imagine how they would fight over money.... They would tear each other's throats out."

Violence among participants of Russia's often raucous and confrontational TV talk shows is hardly unheard of. One of the worst offenders is Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the ultra-nationalist, misnamed Liberal Democratic Party, who frequently punctuates his opinions with physical hostility, but has always seemed to get away with it.

"We believe these accusations against Lebedev are all invented, and ordered from the top," says Genry Reznik, Lebedev's defense attorney.

"The best explanation for this is that they want to scare Lebedev and force him to leave the country. It's a political reprisal against him, pure and simple," he adds.

China volcano shows signs of unrest

A very hazardous volcano at the border of China and North Korea is growing more active, and might erupt in the next few decades, researchers studying the area say.

About 1,100 years ago, the Changbaishan volcano in northeastern China erupted, shooting superheated flows of ash and gas up to 30 miles (50 kilometers) away and blasting a 3-mile-wide (5 km) chunk off the tip of the volcano. The explosion, known as the Millennium eruption because it occurred close to the turn of the first millennium, was one of the largest volcanic events in the last 2,000 years.

Since the Millennium eruption, Changbaishan has seen three smaller eruptions, the most recent of which took place in 1903. Starting in 1999, driven by signs of resumed activity, scientists established the Changbaishan Volcano Observatory.

Now, data collected over the past 12 years suggest that changes in seismic activity, ground deformation and gas emissions all spiked during a brief period of heightened activity from 2002 to 2006. This suggests the magma chamber beneath Changbaishan has awakened, researchers studying the volcano say.

The researchers saw the number of earthquakes increase dramatically during this burst of activity. From 1999 to 2002, and from 2006 to 2011, researchers detected seven earthquakes per month. However, from 2002 to 2006, this rate increased to 72 earthquakes per month, peaking in November 2003, which saw 243 events. Most of these quakes are tied to a region 3 miles beneath the volcanic crater that has risen slowly over the years, which suggests magma is creeping upward.

Gas emissions from hot springs near the volcano show rises in carbon dioxide, hydrogen, helium and nitrogen gases. The researchers say this could be related to outgassing from magma. The ground also expanded briefly and rapidly during the 2002-2006 period. [ Album: Volcanoes from Space ]

Although Changbaishan does not seem in danger of imminent eruption, the researchers say this unrest suggests an explosion could be expected in the next couple of decades. Changbaishan is at the most risk of eruption of the dozen or so volcanoes in mainland China, and potentially could have the most catastrophic effects of all of them, said researcher Jiandong Xu, a volcanologist at the China Earthquake Administration in Beijing.

The researchers will focus on analyzing what hazardous effects an explosive outburst on the scale of the Millennium eruption might have in the future.

"We need to upgrade our current monitoring system in order to be able to meet the need for the early warning system for Changbaishan," Xu told OurAmazingPlanet.

The scientists detailed their findings online Aug. 22 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Cops: Mom 'unconcerned' after baby's fatal fall

A San Diego woman accused of strangling her infant son, and throwing him out of a third-story window to his death was ?calm and unconcerned about the baby,? a police sergeant testified Tuesday.

Zewoinesh Badasso, 32, of North Park, faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 7-month-old son, identified in court records as David N.

Badasso's defense attorney said her client told her she was opening a third-story window while holding her baby on Sept. 7 when?the boy fell to his death.

But in an interview outside the courtroom, defense attorney Amy McDonald indicated she will not argue that Badasso is innocent, but will instead claim that Badasso suffered from ?post-partum psychosis?.

McDonald said witnesses told her that Badasso was a very loving mother who snapped and killed her child. She said Badasso might not have a memory of what actually happened that day.

A stranger called police?after finding the baby on the ground below a unit inside Park View Apartments on 39th Street in North Park.

Deputy District Attorney Nicole Rooney said the medical examiner determined that David had been strangled and had found ligature marks on the boy's neck, and other injuries that showed he had been beaten.

McDonald said her client was in custody when told of David?s death and appeared to be shocked and saddened.

However, a police sergeant who was present inside the apartment when officers questioned Badasso said she appeared uncaring.
