Sega?s classic consoles reborn as fancy laptop lids in Japan

classic sega console designs inspire laptops

Want a laptop that lets you proudly profess your love of classic console gaming to the world? ?Why not zip on over to Japan and put in a pre-order for one of the snazzy new systems that Enterbrain has designed in cooperation with Sega?

The 15.6-inch laptops are available with four different lids. The most standard-issue option is the blue brushed aluminum. The other three are styled like Sega?s classic Mega Drive, Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles. Enterbrain?s systems don?t come with any pre-loaded emulation titles, but they do include a handful of Sega themes for Windows to complete the ambiance.

Retro style (and official licensing) often comes at a steep premium, and that?s certainly the case here. A base configuration with Windows 8 runs about 100,000 Yen ? which is roughly $1000. That gets you a 2.4GHz Pentium 2020M processor and Intel HD graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi. Not exactly powerhouse hardware, but you do at least get a 15.6-inch 1080P display to eyeball.

Cough up another $300 and you?re treated to a Core i3 processor, Nvidia GT650M graphics, twice as much RAM, and HDMI output. $600 more gets you all those goodies plus a muscular Core i7 CPU and trades the 500GB hard drive for a 120GB SSD. The $2000 model is basically the same setup, but you get all four lids instead of having to pick your favorite when you check out.

Planning for the Sega Note line has taken almost two years, and they?ll finally go up for sale on June 3, 2013. It looks like Enterbrain will have a fairly limited supply, too, so you?ll have to move fast if you?ve just got to have one.
